Geely Icon turned into a brawny SUV in China with off-road trim

Geely Icon SUV will get a variant with off-road exterior trim. It has wide wheel arches, huge bumpers, and roof racks. All this styling looks odd as the Icon is an FWD-only crossover on Geely’s entry-level BMA architecture dedicated to urban commutes.

Current Geely Icon in China

Geely Icon is a small crossover that was launched in China in 2020. This model looked refreshing four years ago. However, its sales volume wasn’t on par with other Geely models. The cumulative retail sales reached 96,173 units in China. However, Geely not only sells the Icon but also launches yearly updates of this model. And the latest update of the model is probably the most badass.

New Geely Icon

The new Geely Icon with refreshed exterior styling was revealed in official pictures. In general, it keeps the design language of the older model. However, it adds sizeable bumpers and wide wheel arches. It also has gray plastic on doors, and roof racks on the roof. They fit the Icon’s blocky shape with square side-view mirrors and blackened pillars.

However, the Icon started to look bulky because of the wide wheel arches. Another drawback of this vehicle is its drive type. The Geely Icon offers front-wheel drive only. So, it might look like an off-road SUV. But it is just a family crossover. So, its market positioning is off. It seems the new Icon will target customers who want an off-road car with no real intention of going off-roading.

Thanks to all the off-road trim, the new Icon became bigger. Its dimensions are 4442/1860/1770 mm with a wheelbase of 2640 mm. It rides on 16/17/18-inch wheels. Under the hood, the new Icon has a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine for 178 hp. It is paired with a 7DCT gearbox. As mentioned, an engine sends power only to the front wheels.

The launch date of the Geely Icon has yet to be revealed. However, the car has already applied for a sales license in China. So, it is getting ready to start sales soon.
