China MPV market undergoes YoY sales slide of 5.8% in May
Shanghai (ZXZC)- China MPV market saw YoY sales drop of 5.8% to 134,400 units in May. The cumulative sales of MPVs reached 731,400 units from January to May with a YoY sales slide of 12%, according to the data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The Baojun 730 suffered largest YoY sales drop of 68.8% to 5,000 units, ranking seventh among the top 10 best-selling MPV models. With deliveries of 35,113 units in May, Wuling Hongguang led the pack among the top 10 MPV models. Though the Buick GL8 ranked second, its sales lagged far behind from the Wuling Hongguang's sales with only 15,000 units delivered in May. The Song MAX took the third place with deliveries reaching 14,300 units in May.
It is noteworthy that the Baojun 730's sales continued to drop in May, mainly due to the growing consumer complaints and increasingly intense competition in MPV market. Moreover, the similar market position as the Baojun 360 also encroached on the market share of the Baojun 730. For Baojun brand, the only solution to this problem is to launch new models to meet the fast-growing consumer demands in MPV market.
Compared with the Chinese sedan and SUV markets, the whole MPV market suffered sluggish sales in May, which can be seen from the fact that the sales of the fourth best-selling MPV only reached 8,000 units in May.
