Shanghai (ZXZC)- In March 2022, there were 40,681 China-made passenger vehicles (PVs) registered in Shanghai, representing a 36.6% year-on-year decrease, while showing a 22.9% month-on-month jump, according to the data compiled by ZXZC Auto Research Institute (GARI).

By March registrations of China-built PVs, Shanghai ranked fourth among cities on the Chinese mainland, dropping three spots from the previous month.

For the first quarter of the year, Shanghai's registrations of locally-made PVs amounted to 134,884 units, sliding 22.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2021.

Among the top 10 brands by March homemade PV registrations in the megacity, BYD moved up to the top place with 99.7% of its registrations contributed by new energy vehicles (NEVs). Compared to February, Tesla climbed three spots to the runner-up place, while Volkswagen dropped one spot to the third. Besides, the three German luxury auto brands— Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi—still occupied the No.7 to No.9 spots, the same as that of the month-ago period.

In terms of March 2022 registrations in Shanghai, there were only three oil-fueled models among the 10 top PV models, namely, the Lavida, the Buick GL8, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, but none of them entered the top 5 list. The top 4 places were evenly occupied by the models under Tesla and BYD, including two all-electric models, and two plug-in hybrid electric ones.

Last month, there were 20,851 domestically-built new energy passenger vehicles (NEPVs) registered in Shanghai, representing a 9.4% decline year-on-year, while reflecting an upward movement of 48.9% over a month ago. The megacity's March NEPV registrations were composed of 14,437 all-electric vehicles, 6,413 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (including 726 range-extended electric vehicles), and 1 fuel cell vehicle.

In March, a total of four brands recorded a NEPV registration volume of over 1,000 units in Shanghai, of which BYD and Tesla were honored the top 2 with more than 5,000 units registered respectively. The three leading Chinese NEV startups—NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto—all cracked the top 10 brand rankings by March NEPV registrations.

Among the top 10 best-selling NEPV models in Shanghai last month, six spots were occupied by full-electric products. BYD had five models on the top 10 list. Ranking eighth, the Li ONE was the only model under a Chinese start-up brand.
