FAW Jiefang plans to sell 500,000 electric & hydrogen trucks by 2035
FAW Jiefang is the largest heavy truck manufacturer in China. They also made MPVs and light trucks. It is also wholly owned by FAW Group – one of China’s Big four. On September 29, FAW Jiefang established a New energy business unit at a meeting held in Changchun.
At the conference, FAW Jiefang Chairman Hu Hanjie announced the “15333” new energy strategy. The strategy proposes that FAW Jiefang fully develop in the three technical routes: pure electric, hybrid, and fuel cell, to achieve global leadership in key core technologies by 2030.
According to Chinese media reports, from January to August this year, FAW Jiefang sold 370,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 2.9%, and continued to maintain strong development momentum in the face of the short supply of resources and the downturn in the market.
But this is not their ultimate goal. At this conference, Hu Hanjie said that FAW Jiefang’s new energy vehicle sales would strive to reach 120,000, 320,000, and 500,000 vehicles in 2025, 2030, and 2035, respectively. It accounted for 20%, 50%, and 70% of total sales.
Hu Hanjie introduced that FAW Jiefang New Energy’s five major vehicle platform products cover five major product lines: traction, cargo, dump, particular purpose, and passenger cars, covering typical application scenarios.
From an investment perspective, from 2021 to 2025, FAW Jiefang will invest more than 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) to build a global new energy innovation base, and more than 10 billion yuan($1.55 billion) to create a “zero-carbon factory” as the standard and featuring hydrogen energy industrial clusters. FAW Jiefang Automobile was established on January 18, 2003. It manufactures medium, heavy, and light trucks and buses, with an annual production capacity of 290,000 vehicles. In 2020, FAW Jiefang produced 499,400 trucks and sold 474,000 trucks. Among them, 394,500 medium and heavy trucks.
