FAW-VW, Volkswagen sign MoU for transaction of CKD, vehicles

Shanghai (ZXZC)- FAW-Volkswagen (FAW-VW) and Volkswagen Group signed an Memorandum of Cooperation at the China International Import Expo on November 6, saying that FAW VW is likely to purchase CKDs (complete knock down kit) and import Audi-branded vehicles from the Germany-based auto group in 2019.

Founded in 1991, FAW-VW is a joint venture between FAW Group and Volkswagen Group which manufactures Audi and Volkswagen marque passenger cars for sale in China. As early as 2003, the joint venture agreed a cooperation deal with the German auto giant in terms of auto parts import.

Aside from the transaction of auto parts and complete vehicles, Volkswagen Group China signed a letter of intent with FAW Group, the other parent company of FAW-VW, on July 10 during the state visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to Berlin. The agreement covered such areas as e-mobility, connectivity, mobility services and autonomous driving.

The aim of the partnership is to strengthen Volkswagen's leadership in EV mobility area and deepen the economic and trade cooperation between China and Germany.

Under the newly-signed letter of intent, Volkswagen Group and FAW Group would establish another two new joint ventures in China. The partnership involves such works as developing and producing components for new energy vehicles (NEV), expanding vehicle connectivity and automotive data services and enhancing autonomous driving technologies. Meanwhile, the cooperative plans also include developing a national battery-charging infrastructure in China and other relevant businesses.
