China’s power battery installed capacity dips 0.3% YoY in Jan. 2023

Shanghai (ZXZC)- In Jan. 2023, China's power battery output reached 28.2GWh, shrinking 5% year on year, while tumbling 46.3% month on month, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance (CAPBIIA). 

Of the power batteries produced last month, 9.8GWh and 18.3GWh were ternary-lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, down 9.3% and 2.5% from the year-ago period, respectively.

Data by the CAPBIIA show that the country's power battery installed capacity amounted to 16.1GWh in Jan., edging down 0.3% from the previous year, while also plunging 55.4% from the previous month.

To be specific, the installed capacity of ternary-lithium batteries and LFP batteries reached 5.4GWh and 10.7GWh last month, sliding 25.6% and 20.4%, respectively, compared to the year-ago period.

Moreover, there were 7.9GWh made-in-China power batteries exported to overseas markets in Jan., 67.7% of which were ternary-lithium batteries.

Regarding the monthly power battery installed capacity in Jan. 2023, the top 5 battery makers accounted for 91.2% of China’s overall volume. Of them, CATL and BYD-backed FinDreams Battery still gained the first two seats with over 5GWh batteries installed last month each. CALB, EVE Energy, and Gotion High-Tech ranked third to fifth, but none of them recorded a Jan. installed capacity of over 1GWh.

CATL, FinDreams Battery (the EV battery unit of BYD), CALB, and Gotion High-Tech were still the top 4 among China's EV battery players, accounting for 86.28% of the country's total capacity. Compared to the previous month, Sunwoda moved up one spot to the fifth, while EVE Energy dropped one place to the sixth.
