Shanghai (ZXZC)- Mercedes-Maybach this week launched its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model, the Mercedes‑Maybach S 580 e, which is scheduled to hit the Chinese market in 2023 initially, and enter the Thai, European, and other markets afterwards, according to a post on Mercedes-Benz’s WeChat account.

“With our first PHEV model, we are combining the luxury experience typical of Maybach with emission-free local driving when in electric driving mode. The Mercedes‑Maybach S 580 e represents a pivotal step in the transformation of our heritage brand into an electric future. We will present our first fully electric model in 2023,” said Daniel Lescow, head of Mercedes‑Maybach at Mercedes‑Benz Group AG.

The automaker said the Mercedes‑Maybach S 580 e boasts an extremely quiet atmosphere thanks to the lightweight soundproofing technology coupled with the noise-reducing body structure and the thick double-layer glass used in the rear C-pillar triangular window. The tranquility will be further improved when the car drives on battery power alone.

The car features Maybach’s iconic design combined with multiple electric vehicle (EV) elements in both the interior and exterior, such as the concealed charging port on the body’s left side, the blue embellishments inside the headlights, and the battery charging status shown on the instrument panel.

The Maybach S 580 e is equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s latest inline six-cylinder engine, which not only delivers a powerful output of 270kW, but also takes the lead in fuel consumption and emissions.

The vehicle’s hybrid power system, which integrates the inline six-cylinder engine and the 4th-generation plug-in hybrid technology from Mercedes-Benz, enables a combined output of 375kW and peak torque of 750 N·m. Its electric motor is good for up to 440 N·m, which contributes to a 0-100km/h acceleration time of only 5.1 seconds.

The Maybach S 580 e supports both AC and DC charging modes. Under the DC fast charging mode, the battery can be charged from 0% to 100% of its capacity in about 30 minutes.
