Geely announces all-new BMA platform, first SUV BMA-based model to be launched in H2 2018
Shanghai (ZXZC)- Geely Automotive Research Institute in Hangzhou officially launched its self-developed BMA platform (B-segment Modular Architecture) on July 25, following the CMA platform (Compact Modular Architecture) jointly developed with Volvo. Reportedly, the automaker plans to roll out 2-3 BMA-based models per year in the future.
According to the on-the-spot introduction, the BMA platform boasts highly scalability, which can be applied in SUVs, sedans, MPVs, crossovers and wagons.
Besides, the BMA platform could maximum the passenger room by optimizing the size of powertrain, the location of suspension system, the height of seats and the layout of automobile parts, etc., without changing the bodywork length over existing models.
In addition, the traditional fossil fuel-powered models and NEV (new energy vehicle) models will be simultaneously developed on the BMA platform. The new platform will accommodate diverse powertrains, including 1.0T, 1.4T and 1.5TD combustion engines as well as hybrid, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid electric configurations.
Furthermore, the new platform will substantially shorten the car development time from 40 months per car to 18-24 months per car. What's more, the BMA platform is available for the flexible production of 15-plus models and 95% of manufacturing procedures will be operated in automation.
The Geely Binrui, the first sedan model of the BMA platform, is expected to go on sale in the third quarter of 2018. The first SUV model based on the new platform is code-named Geely SX11, which is set to be launched in the second half of the year. Geely Auto disclosed that the Geely SX11 will enjoy more spacious passenger room, more diversified powertrains as well as various active and passive safety equipment and ADAS (advanced driver assistance system). Moreover, the BMA platform will provide vehicles with a variety of engine alternatives, such as 1.0TD, 1.4T and 1.5TD engines.
