XPENG Motors crowned champion EV startup in China by May deliveries

Shanghai (ZXZC)- China-based EV startup XPENG Motors delivered 2,704 units of its first production model, the XPENG G3 SUV, to customers in May, once again taking the championship among EV startups in China by monthly deliveries, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The CPCA's data showed that the Guangzhou-based company is also the champion EV startup in this country in terms of Jan.-May deliveries.

According to a press release issued by XPENG Motors, it aims to hand over more than 10,000 vehicles by the end of July. The cumulative number is scheduled to exceed 40,000 units by the end of December 2019.

XPENG Motors expanded its business footprint into ride-hailing service area in May by kicking off the trial operation of Pengster, its pilot chauffeur-driven car-hailing service in Guangzhou.

The pilot project, using a fleet of the startup's intelligent G3 all-electric SUVs, will employ a dedicated team comprising professionally trained, qualified drivers.

Following the XPENG G3, the XPENG P7, the EV maker's second volume production model, was unveiled at the Auto Shanghai 2019.

The P7 four-door coupe boasts the 4s-to-100km/h acceleration and a high onboard intelligence running on the dual-chip SEPA (Smart Electric Platform Architecture) platform, said XPENG Motors. It will be manufactured at the company's own factory in Zhaoqing, which is currently under construction. Delivery of the P7 is targeted for the second quarter of 2020.

Major rivals like WM Motor and NIO have recently announced their May sales performances as well. WM Motor said the deliveries of the EX5 SUV reached 2,056 units in May, the best-ever figure for 2019.

Additionally, NIO delivered 1,089 units of the ES8 all-electric SUV last month, which made the cumulative deliveries for the second quarter totaled 2,213 units. By the end of May, NIO has so far handed over a total of 17,550 ES8s since the EV model hit the market in June of 2018.
