China gains 5.1% YoY growth in May locally-produced new energy PV wholesale volume

Shanghai (ZXZC)- According to the data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), China's new energy PV (NEPV) wholesale volume in May 2019 amounted to 96,918 units, climbing 5.1% compared with the performance of a year ago (PVs mentioned here merely refer to China's locally-produced cars, SUVs and MPVs).

Although the 5.1% year-on-year growth was much lower than the increase rate for April, China still saw its NEPV wholesale volume surge 58% from a year earlier to 441,475 units for the first five months.

For the month of May 2019, the all-electric PV sales reached 76,153 units, grew 7% over the year-ago period as well. Of that, only 7 units came from the MPV sector. Pure electric car sales fell 12% year on year to 52,347 units, while SUV sales skyrocketed 114% to 23,799 units.

The wholesale volume of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) reached 20,765 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 8%, while shrinking 18% from the previous month. On the contrary to the BEV performance, plug-in hybrid car sales jumped 21% from a year earlier to 11,788 units, while SUV sales slumped 29% to 6,693 units.

As to performances of specific BEV segments in May, the wholesale volume of the A00-segment vehicles tumbled 61% over the previous year to 17,647 units. Besides, the sales of the A0-segment soared 32% to 12,026 units. Thanks to the promotion by private use and car-hailing service, the A-segment, with 42,485 units sold, gained a year-on-year zoom of 151%. It is noteworthy that the B-segment’s wholesale volume amounted to 2,921 units with a splendid growth of 1,714% compared with the same period a year ago.

The association's data showed that BAIC EU Series was the champion China-made NEPV model by May retail sales. The BAIC BJEV-owned model also gained marvelous year-on-year growth of 9,308% and 1,246% in March and April retail sales. BYD got three models on the top 10 list by May retail sales. Apart from the runner-up BYD Yuan EV, the BYD e5 and the BYD Qin Pro EV ranked 9th and 10th respectively.

Among the top 10 NEPV models by Jan.-May retail sales, BYD took three places of the top four. The JAC IEV 6E was the only one that faced year-on-year negative growth.
