China new energy passenger vehicle sales soar 142% year on year in May

Shanghai (ZXZC)- China posted a YoY surge of 142% and a MoM growth of 30% in new energy passenger vehicle sales to 92,188 units in May, according to the data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The cumulative sales of new energy passenger vehicles through May reached 280,635 units, soaring 140% from a year earlier.

BAIC BJEV led the pack with May deliveries of 19,632 units, a surge of 201% over the previous year. Ranking second, BYD delivered 13,453 vehicles with an increase of 54% year on year. SAIC Passenger Vehicle took the third place with deliveries reaching10,246 units, a remarkable growth of 382% from a year ago. Compared with the top 10 automakers by NEV April sales, the top five automakers remained the same while BAIC BJEV's and BYD's rankings have exchanged. However, JAC fell out of the top 10, while Geely Auto entered into the top 10 and ranked ninth.

During May, sales of pure electric vehicles totaled 73,072 units with a YoY surge of 130%, taking up 79% of total NEV sales in May. The total deliveries of PHEV reached 19,161 units in May, zooming 199% from a year earlier.

As to top 10 best-selling new energy vehicle models, the BAIC EC Series was the best-seller with May deliveries of 12,624 units. Sales of the JMC E200 reached 4,534 units in May, taking the second place among the top 10 best-selling new energy passenger vehicle models. The BYD Qin ranked third with sales of 4,496 units in May.

In May, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) saw solid sales growth of 199% compared with the same period last year to 19,161 units. BYD Qin ranked first with sales of 4,496 units, a substantial surge of 1177% over the previous year. The BYD Song DM recorded a YoY sales growth of 58% to 3,268 units. The Roewe eRX5 was the third best-selling PHEV with sales reaching 3,030 units in May.

In terms of the market shares of different vehicle types, the A00 class still maintained its dominant position in pure electric vehicle market with shares of 62% in May, 1% less than the figure in April. In the PHEV market, A-class models took the overwhelming leading position with market shares of 90% in May.
