China's new energy-vehicle (NEV) ownership continues to grow, as penetration approaches 50 percent.

At the end of June, China's NEV ownership reached 24.72 million vehicles, accounting for 7.18 percent of the total vehicle ownership of 440 million, according to data released today by China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

By the end of 2023, China's NEV ownership reached 20.41 million vehicles, accounting for 6.07 percent of the total vehicle ownership of 336 million vehicles, according to previously published data.

At the end of June 2022, China's NEV ownership reached 10.01 million vehicles, surpassing the 10 million milestone for the first time.

In the first half of 2024, new registrations of NEVs amounted to 4,397,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 39.41 percent, and accounting for 41.42 percent of new vehicle registrations.

By the end of June, including motorcycle drivers, the number of motor vehicle drivers in China reached 532 million. The number of automobile drivers was 496 million, accounting for 93.17 percent of the total number of drivers.

In the first half of 2024, the number of newly licensed drivers in China was 13.97 million, a year-on-year increase of 17.36 percent.
