Nio (NYSE: NIO) reached its goal of adding 1,000 battery swap stations in China this year a day before its annual event, Nio Day 2023.
The company added five new battery swap stations in China today, bringing the total to 2,305.
Nio had 1,305 battery swap stations in China by the end of 2022, and the latest figure means it has added 1,000 stations this year.
Nio's 1,000th battery swap station added this year is located near the Shaanxi Nature Museum in Xi'an, Shaanxi province in northwest China. The company will hold Nio Day 2023 at the Xi'an Olympic Sports Center, about 30 kilometers away, starting at 7:00 pm Beijing Time on December 23.
Nio announced at the Nio Day 2022 event on December 24, 2022, that it aimed to have more than 1,700 battery swap stations in China by the end of 2023, meaning it planned to add about 400 this year.
On February 21, Nio significantly increased that goal, saying it would add 1,000 battery swap stations in 2023, bringing the total to more than 2,300 by the end of the year.
Of the 1,000 new stations, about 400 would be located near highway service areas or highway entrances and exits, while the other 600 or so would be deployed in urban areas, it said in February.
As of today, Nio has 745 battery swap stations along highways in China.
Cumulatively, the company's battery swap stations have provided more than 34.3 million services, according to its charging map.
Nio also added 5 supercharging stations today, taking the total number to 2,082, offering 9,617 supercharging piles.
The company added 2 destination charging stations today, bringing the total number of such facilities to 1,483, offering 11,305 chargers.
Currently, 80.4 percent of Nio owners can find at least one battery swap station within 3 kilometers of their homes, according to its charging map.
Nio announced last month that it has entered into partnerships with Changan Automobile and Geely Holding to jointly build the battery swap network as well as build battery swap-enabled models.
William Li, Nio's founder, chairman and CEO, compared Nio's battery swap service to a cloud service and said last month that the time has come to open it up to other automakers.
Nio's battery swap network will include both dedicated and shared networks, and the company will begin using building a shared network next year that will be available for both the Nio brand and its sub-brand codenamed Alps, Li said during a December 5 earnings call.
