The site, operated by a joint venture between Shell and BYD, offers 258 fast-charging terminals.

China is one of the most important growth markets for Shell's retail and mobility business, where the company's charging stations are utilized at two to three times the industry average, according to István Kapitány, executive vice president of Shell's global retail and mobility business.

As of the first half of the year, Shenzhen had 860,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs), the city government said in a WeChat post today. The city is home to the headquarters of BYD, China's largest NEV maker.

Shenzhen is accelerating the construction of supercharging stations, and the city is expected to have 300 supercharging stations by 2025, with that number rising to 1,000 by 2030, according to the post.

BYD and Shell signed a global strategic partnership agreement on March 23, 2022, in which the two plan to kick off their partnership in China and Europe first, with plans to expand that partnership globally, BYD said at the time.

The two agreed at the time that they planned to set up a joint venture to develop an EV charging network in China.

The joint venture is expected to operate more than 10,000 EV charging terminals in Shenzhen, with plans to expand to other Chinese cities in the future, BYD said in a statement at the time.

In addition to BYD, Shell signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Nio (NYSE: NIO) in November 2021 to jointly build battery swap stations in China and Europe.

On August 1, 2022, the first Nio-Shell battery swap station and supercharging station went into operation in Xiamen, Fujian province in southeastern China.

On May 16 of this year, the first Nio-Shell battery swap station in Europe went online in the Netherlands.
