China's new energy vehicle market could see an even bigger surprise next year, with growth rates likely to exceed 30 percent and sales likely to reach 1.8 million units, said Ye Shengji, deputy secretary-general of the China Automobile Industry Association.

Ye made the prediction at a salon held today by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, saying that government measures, including an aggressive push for new-energy vehicles' entry into the rural markets, have boosted new-energy vehicle sales by nearly 200,000 units.

He predicted that China's annual sales of new energy vehicles this year will exceed 1.3 million units, an increase of nearly 8 percent, exceeding expectations.

He said that through research and forecasts, China's auto sales will exceed 26 million units in 2021, which is expected to achieve a 3-5 percent growth.

Bai Hua, an official at China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said earlier today that China expects to sell over 1.3 million new energy vehicles (NEV) this year, up from 1.2 million units last year.
