MG plans to get rid of its British look by following Roewe
The last British-look model MG brand has a poorer performance with Roewe in Chinese market.
The “first Internet SUV” RX5 sold more than 20,000 units for a single month, receiving wide market recognition. Analysts believe that its success is mainly resulted from its down-to-earth propaganda to young customers by getting rid of British-look label. It seems that MG brand, emphasizing on sporting and performance, has to make some changes to survive in Chinese market.
British-look style gives an artificial impression on customers. Therefore, when Roewe RX5 removed its British label and bravely tried to be itself, it got great success and sold well.
MG is also launching a similar model. On February 14th, MG’s first Internet SUV MG ZS made debut and released its presale price. Public data shows that MG ZS has three versions, with the top God of War version selling RMB 119,800. This model will be launched on 3th, March.
MG ZS’s exterior appearance looks similar to Roewe RX5. It also equips with the intelligent interconnected system co-developed by SAIC and Alibaba. Different from Roewe RX5, MG ZS has a lower product position as an entry-level A0-class SUV. MG ZS equips with the newly developed 1.0T three-cylinder turbocharged Direct-Injection Engine, with the maximum horsepower of 125p and maximum torque of 170N·m. It uses 6AT gearbox from AISIN. Another model is a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, with the maximum horsepower of 120p and maximum torque of 150 N·m. It equips with 5 MT and 4AT gearbox.
Analysts point out that released data shows that MG ZS has rich configuration, but its popularity relies heavily on the prices. But it is also predicted that MG ZS has great possibilities to achieve success, concluded from the recognition on SUV models in domestic market. SAIC passenger vehicle may face another question of how to find out the differences of the two similar models at the present time.
