China has 24.72 million new energy vehicles running on roads by June 2024

Shanghai (ZXZC)- As of the end of June 2024, the total number of motor vehicles in China has reached 440 million, including 345 million cars, 24.72 million units are new energy vehicles (NEVs), according to China's Ministry of Public Security.

In the first half of 2024, 16.8 million new motor vehicles were registered nationwide, with 12.42 million of these being cars, marking a 5.7% year-on-year increase.

By the end of June, the total volume of NEVs in China reached 24.72 million units, accounting for 7.18% of the total number of cars. Among these, the number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) stood at 18.134 million units, accounting for 73.35% of the China’s total NEV volume.

In the first half of the year, China saw 4.397 million new NEVs registered, a 39.41% year-on-year jump, setting a historical record. NEVs accounted for 35.41% of all new car registrations in the period.

As of June this year, 96 cities across the country had more than 1 million cars, an increase of 8 cities compared to the previous year. Among these, 43 cities had over 2 million cars, and 26 cities had over 3 million cars. Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing each had more than 6 million cars, while Shanghai, Suzhou, and Zhengzhou each had more than 5 million cars.

Furthermore, the number of motor vehicle drivers in China had reached 532 million by the end of June, with 496 million being car drivers, accounting for 93.17% of all drivers. In the first half of 2024, 13.97 million new driver’s licenses were issued, reflecting a 17.36% year-on-year increase.
