Tesla sells 71,704 China-made vehicles in October 2022

Beijing (ZXZC)- In the tenth month of 2022, Tesla sold 71,704 China-made vehicles in wholesale, representing a 31.8% jump over the previous year, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Compared to August, Tesla China’s monthly wholesale volume slipped down 13.7%.

In the past month, the US electric vehicle maker saw 54,504 Shanghai-made vehicles shipped overseas, recovering greatly from the previous month. Notably, October’s export volume is also the highest among 2022 yet. 

In the first ten months of this year, the cumulative wholesale volume of China-made Tesla vehicles summed up to 554,778 vehicles, 219,427 units of which were exported to overseas markets, accounting for roughly 40% of the total volume.

Judging from the overall monthly retail volume of new energy passenger vehicles ("NEPV") in China, Tesla secured 2.5% of the market in October, notching down 1.2 percentage points year over year. At the same time, China’s locally-owned brands accounted for 63% of the entire NEPV market, edging up by 2.1 percentage points from the previous year. The market share of new energy vehicle startups amounted to 11.4% in the past month, slipping 2.9 percentage points compared to the year-ago period.

Overall, China’s NEPV wholesale volume hit a new high in October, with 15 automakers selling over 10,000 vehicles, which was 8 companies more than a year ago. According to the CPCA, aside from BYD (217,518 NEPVs sold), whose leading position in the NEPV market was unshakable, other traditional automakers including SAIC-GM-Wuling (52,086 NEPVs sold), GAC AION (30,063 NEPVs sold), Dongfeng eGT (13,616 NEPVs sold), Geely (31,070 NEPVs sold), Chery Auto (18,301 NEPVs sold), and Great Wall Motor (10,954 NEPVs sold) also posted prominent performance in the past month.  

In October, China’s NEPV wholesale volume shot up 85.8% year on year while edging up 0.4% over September to roughly 676,000 vehicles. From January to October, there were a total of 5.015 million NEPVs sold via wholesale, up  110.8% from a year earlier.
