The center is Mercedes’ second R&D center in China, indicating the auto giant’s commitment to the China market with expanded investments. The Shanghai center is set to work on intelligent connectivity, autonomous driving, software & hardware development, and big data technologies, further enhancing the automaker’s R&D capabilities.
According to Mercedes, the center will bring hundreds of new jobs to the R&D field.
The board member and head of Mercedes-Benz Group’s Greater China business, Hubertus Troska, said China has become the key innovation center of technology and is also the main driving force of the auto industry’s transformation. Local consumers’ anticipation of new technologies is like no other worldwide. A strong R&D layout in the country will help Mercedes lead the development of electrical drive and automotive software fields.
Notably, months ago in 2021, the German auto giant established a new R&D center in Beijing, with over 1,000 engineers. The Beijing center is the first R&D center outside Germany that holds the same importance to the automaker as its R&D headquarters near Stuttgart.
The group said that Beijing will continue serving as the home base of Mercedes’ R&D activities within the country. Meanwhile, the new Shanghai center helps the group explore the technical potential of China.
