Shanghai (ZXZC)- In December 2021, the registrations of locally-made passenger vehicles in Shanghai, one of the most developed cities in China, reached 74,051 units, dropping 16% from the previous year, while jumping 25.6% from the previous month, according to data compiled by ZXZC Auto Research Institute.

Among the homegrown PVs registered in Shanghai in Dec. 2021, 32,099 units were new energy vehicles (NEVs), representing a 2.7% growth compared to the year-ago period. The Dec. NEV registrations were composed of 24,897 BEVs and 7,202 PHEVs (including 1,123 REEVs).

In terms of ownerships, there were 61,988 and 9,869 locally-made PVs registered by private users and B2B users respectively in Dec. 2021. Besides, a total of 2,150 homebred PVs were registered for car rental service.

By Dec. PV registrations, the top three auto brands in Shanghai were Tesla, Volkswagen, and Buick. Among the top 10 brands, Tesla was the unique one with only all-electric models for sale. The German trio Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi were all on the list of the top 10 brands, ranking 7th, 9th, and 10th respectively. Compared to Nov. 2021, BYD dropped 3 spots to the 5th.

On the top 10 PV models list by Dec. registrations in Shanghai, the first two spots were occupied by Tesla's models. Aside from the Model Y and the Model 3, there were four NEV models, namely, the Roewe Ei5, the ID.3, the ID.4, and the Roewe RX5 ePLUS, also cracking the top 10 rankings. Notably, the top 10 models were all assembled at Shanghai's local manufacturing facilities.

Regarding Dec. registrations of locally-made new energy passenger vehicles (NEPVs), BYD dropped to the runner-up place among auto brands compared to Nov. 2021. The three leading Chinese startups—XPeng, NIO, and Li Auto, all entered the top 10 brands list.

In Dec. 2021, the hottest-selling NEPV model in Shanghai was still the Model Y, outnumbering the runner-up Model 3 by 2,264 units. The Roewe Ei5 was one of the three NEPV models logging Dec. registrations of over 1,000 units. The Li ONE was the only Chinese startup-owned one on the top 10 NEPV models list. In addition, the Good Cat was the sole ORA-branded model registered in the megacity.
