China to cease accepting 24.25-26.65GHz vehicle radar applications next year: MIIT

Beijing (ZXZC)- China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued a temporary provision on automotive radar radio management, which will be enforced on March 1st, 2022.

After the provision takes effect, the corresponding radio management administration will no longer accept and approve model applications for 24.25-26.65GHz vehicular radar radio transmitters.

Currently, there are three main working frequency bands regarding automotive millimeter-wave radars, namely 24GHz, 77GHz, and 79GHz.

The 24GHz band has a detection range of roughly 60 meters and is widely used on BSD and PA functions due to its mature performances and lower costs. The 77GHz band offers a detection range of 100-250 meters and is mostly applied to ACC, AEB, and FCW functions. The detection range of the 79GHz band can reach 200 meters with a broad range and angular precision used on BSW and LCA functions.

To further develop and apply ADAS and advanced autonomous driving technologies, MIIT has decided to expire the 24GHz broadband (21.65-26.65GHz) in 2022 so that companies will adopt a broader frequency.

The provision pointed out that when used on the automotive radars, the main scenarios for the 76-79GHz frequency include ACC, anti-collision, blind-spot detection, lane merging assistance, parking assistance, and pedestrian detections.

The provision also sets requirements for the specific radio-frequency techniques for the 76-79GHz frequency. It emphasizes that unless stipulated otherwise, the said frequency should not be used on other ground-based radars and aircraft (including unmanned aerial vehicles, balloons, and airships).

In addition, the already in-use 24.25-26.65GHz radars implemented before November 19th, 2019, can be continued to use until unserviceable in principle.
