Shanghai (ZXZC)- In April 2021, there were 11,967 consumers in China buying the Mandatory Liability Insurance for Traffic Accidents of Motor Vehicles (MLI) for Tesla's vehicles, according the to China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC).

With an insurance volume of 5,520 units, the Model Y was the best-selling all-electric SUV model in China last month. Meanwhile, it also the fourth-place winner among mid-sized SUV models priced over 300,000 yuan ($46,490), following the Audi Q5L (14,860 units), the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (14,839 units), and BMW X3 (12,716 units).

The performance made Tesla the eighth premium brand in China by Apr. insurance registrations. The top 7 upscale brands were Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus, Cadillac, Hongqi, and Volvo. The Germany's Big Three still largely outperformed others with their car registrations all topping 70,000 units in April.

Among the top 15 premium brands by Apr. insurance registrations, there were two Chinese indigenous ones—Hongqi and NIO, which ranked sixth and eleventh respectively.

NIO's car registrations amounted to 7,404 units last month, including 1,618 ES8s, 3,302 ES6s, and 2,484 EC6s. Among full-electric SUV models sold in China, the ES6, the EC6, and the ES8 ranked second, third, and seventh by Apr. insurance volumes.

It is noteworthy that the transaction price of NIO’s vehicles stood at 437,200 yuan ($67,720), only following Porsche (834,400 yuan), Land Rover (670,600 yuan), and Mercedes-Benz (439,300 yuan).

Moreover, the XPeng G3 and the WM EX5 ranked fourth and fifth on the list of all-electric SUVs with their registrations reaching 2,063 and 1,963 units in April respectively.
