Mazda’s Q1 deliveries in China fall 30.7% year on year

Shanghai (ZXZC)- Mazda delivered a total of 36,351 new vehicles in China during the first quarter of 2020, suffering a plunge of 30.7% over a year ago mainly due to the impact of COVID-19 spread.

The retail sales in March reached 12,958 units, dropping 28.3% year over year, while tremendously soaring 433.3% compared to February, the month that witnessed a sweeping plunge all over the country. The volumes for Jan. and Feb. stood at 20,963 units (-8.2%) and 2,430 units (-79%) respectively.

FAW Mazda saw its retail sales slump 30.3% from a year earlier to 5,314 units in March, making its year-to-date sales total 14,106 units (-28.3%). Although the growth still remained negative, the joint venture surpassed the first-quarter delivery target with its market share rising to 0.47%.

As for specific products, the deliveries of the Mazda 6 Atenza and the CX-4 amounted to 2,582 units and 2,732 units in March respectively. Year-to-date volumes for them were 6,941 units and 7,165 units.

Mazda said the retail sales for Changan Mazda reached 7,644 units in March and 22,245 units for the first three months. After a calculation based on earlier data, we found out that the joint venture’s decrease in March and the first quarter stood at 26.8% and 32.1%.

With 5,669 units delivered, the Mazda 3 Axela developed by Changan Mazda was still the best-seller of March. From Jan. to Mar., 17,326 consumers took delivery of the popular car model. Besides, the Q1 deliveries of the Mazda CX-5 amounted to 4,787 units, of which 1,927 units were sold last month.

Mazda has announced that, by March 2022, it won't release any new or significantly updated models as it develops a new large-vehicle architecture and powertrain. It may further embarrass the not abundant product lineup during the hiatus.
