China EV battery installations in Sept: CATL's share 44.02%, BYD's 24.2%

CATL and BYD both saw their share of the Chinese EV battery market decrease slightly in September, as smaller players, including Gotion High-tech, gained share.

In September, China's installed volume of power batteries was a record 54.5 GWh, up 49.6 percent year-on-year and up 15.5 percent from August, according to data released today by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

CATL installed 23.99 GWh of power batteries in September, continuing to rank first with a 44.02 percent share, but down 0.44 percentage points from August's 44.46 percent share.

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) installed 13.18 GWh of power batteries in September, ranking second with a 24.2 percent share, down 0.77 percentage points from 24.97 percent in August.

CALB's power battery installed capacity was 3.65 GWh in September, ranking third with a 6.69 percent share, down 0.65 percentage points from 7.34 percent in August.

Gotion High-tech ranked fourth in September with 3.16 GWh of installed capacity and a 5.8 percent share.

Gotion's share in September increased by 1.21 percentage points from 4.58 percent in August, the largest increase among the top 15.

China's lithium ternary battery installed capacity in September was 13.1 GWh, accounting for 24.1 percent of the total, up 7.4 percent year-on-year and 8.2 percent from August.

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery installed capacity was 41.3 GWh, accounting for 75.8 percent of the total, up 70.9 percent year-on-year and up 18 percent from August.

CATL, CALB, and LG Energy Solution were the top three in terms of installed capacity of ternary batteries in September, with shares of 73.15 percent, 9.27 percent, and 6.79 percent, respectively.

In the LFP battery market, CATL, BYD, and CALB were the top three in terms of installed capacity in September, with shares of 34.8 percent, 31.8 percent, and 6.91 percent, respectively.

China produced 111.3 GWh of power and other batteries in September, up 43.3 percent year-on-year and up 9.9 percent from August.

Production of ternary batteries was 27 GWh in September, up 6.8 percent year-on-year and up 8.7 percent from August.

LFP battery production was 84.2 GWh, up 61.2 percent year-on-year and up 10.4 percent from August.

China exported 11.8 GWh of power batteries in September, including 8.2 GWh of ternary batteries and 3.4 GWh of LFP batteries.
