BYD Denza launches tri-motor-equipped Z9GT with starting price of $47,460
The Z9GT comes standard with e3 technology, which can be seen as a scaled-down version of BYD's e⁴ technology built for ultra-luxury cars, bringing powerful performance to affordable models.
Denza, BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand, has officially launched the Z9GT, after starting pre-sales a month ago.
The model, the first to be launched after BYD acquired full stake in Denza, features a powerful tri-motor powertrain and offers competitive pricing.
The Z9GT is the first model in Denza's Z series, which will be sedans, with GT standing for Grand Tourer.
Denza is offering three plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variants and two battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants for the model, with starting prices of RMB 334,800 ($47,460), RMB 364,800, RMB 414,800, RMB 354,800 and RMB 384,800 respectively.
The company is also offering two PHEV First Edition models for the Z9GT limited to 2010 units, with starting prices of RMB 364,800 and RMB 414,800, respectively.
These prices are only applicable until December 31, 2024, Denza said. Deliveries of the model began at launch.
The Z9GT comes standard with BYD's e3 technology, which can be seen as a scaled-down version of the NEV maker's e⁴ technology built for ultra-luxury cars.
Built on the Xuanji architecture, the e3 brings tri-motor independent drive with dual-motor independent steering at the rear wheels, enabling the Z9GT to achieve a rear-wheel steering angle of plus or minus 10°.
This technology gives the Z9GT a turning radius of just 4.62 meters, which is comparable to an A0-class model with a short wheelbase.
The five-seater measures 5,180 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width and 1,500/1,480 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,125 mm.
The Z9GT BEV is equipped with one front motor and two rear motors with peak power of 230 kW, 240 kW and 240 kW, respectively, and is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.
Both BEV variants carry a battery pack with a capacity of 100 kWh and a CLTC range of 630 kilometers.
The Z9GT PHEV has a front motor with a peak power of 200 kW and both rear motors with a peak power of 220 kW. It additionally has a 2.0 T engine. This powertrain enables the vehicle to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.
The Z9GT PHEV has a combined range of up to 1,100 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.
Denza was initially established as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler in February 2011, with each holding a 50 percent stake. In February 2022, the Daimler brand was rebranded as Mercedes-Benz.
On January 24, 2022, BYD said in an announcement that it had signed an equity transfer agreement with Daimler regarding Denza, which would increase BYD's stake in the company to 90 percent and reduce Daimler's stake to 10 percent.
Earlier this month, Denza saw a change in its shareholder information, with Mercedes-Benz dropping out and BYD becoming the sole shareholder.
In addition to the Z9GT, Denza's Z lineup also includes a sedan called the Z9, which entered a regulatory filing catalog with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) earlier this month, with a launch set for the fourth quarter.
