Tesla Model Y said to make debut at Auto Shanghai 2019
Shanghai (ZXZC)- The Tesla Model Y, the fifth mass-produced vehicle model for the U.S.-based EV maker, is said to make its debut at the Auto Shanghai 2019 kicking off on April 19, according to Chinese media outlets.
The Model Y, based on the same platform as the Model 3, is positioned as a compact SUV and is expected to be priced between the Model 3 and the Model S. Like the Model X, the Model Y also features three rows of passenger seats, so how to arrange 7 seats within a limited space will be an attractive highlight for visitors. Besides, the yet-to-be-unveiled model is devoid of butterfly doors subject to its affordable price position.
According to a document about Tesla's Gigafactory 3 in Shangghai, the Model Y will be locally produced in China in the future along with the Model 3 and its production capacity is planned to reach 5,000 units per week by February 2021.
In addition, Tesla is reportedly going to produce the Model Y at the Gigafactory 1 in Nevada and ramp up the production capacity to 7,000 units per week before December 2020.
