Car and City: Shanghai tops other Chinese cities by Model 3, Model Y registrations in Dec. 2022
Shanghai (ZXZC)- For the year of 2022, there were 441,676 China-made Tesla-branded vehicles registered across the Chinese mainland, representing a 41.64% surge compared to the previous year, according to the data compiled by ZXZC Auto Research Institute ("GARI").
The annual registrations of the made-in-China Model 3 amounted to 125,208 units last year, shrinking 17.21% year on year, while the Shanghai-made Model Y recorded a 97.06% year-over-year surge with 316,468 units registered through 2022.
As for monthly performance, Tesla saw its China-made vehicle registrations on the Chinese mainland plunge 40.66% from a year earlier to 41,665 units in the last month of 2022. The Dec. registrations were composed of 12,447 Model 3s (-58.48% YoY) and 29,218 Model Ys (-27.39% YoY).
Regarding the monthly registrations of China-made new energy vehicles (NEVs) in Dec. 2022, Tesla was credited the runner-up among all auto brands in China.
Among all locally-built NEV models sold in China, the Model Y was the second runner-up by Dec. 2022 registrations, following the BYD Song PLUS DM-i and the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV.
With regard to regional distribution in Dec. 2022, Shanghai ranked highest among cities in China with 1,690 made-in-China Model 3s registered. Hangzhou was the other city who had over 1,000 Model 3s registered last month.
In terms of the Dec. registrations of the homemade Model Y, there were seven cities with over 1,000 units registered, respectively. Of those, Shanghai was still the champion with a registration volume of 3,795 Models Ys.
