Shanghai (ZXZC)- In March 2022, Guangzhou, the capital of South China's Guangdong province, was credited the second runner-up among cities on the Chinese mainland with its registrations of homegrown passenger vehicles (PVs) reaching 41,737 units, according to the data compiled by ZXZC Auto Research Institute.

Compared to the year-ago and month-ago periods, Guangzhou's locally-made PV registrations in March grew 5.4% and 112.1% respectively.

As for year-to-date performance, the megacity saw its first-quarter homemade PV registrations edge down 1.6% year on year to 111,941 units.

The top 2 PV brands by March registrations in Guangzhou were still Toyota and Honda. The No.3 and No.4 brands were the Chinese indigenous ones—Trumpchi and BYD. It is noteworthy that the vehicles under Trumpchi include those from the AION brand. Tesla was among the top 10 PV brands as the unique one with only full-electric vehicles for sales. The two luxury German brands—Mercedes-Benz and BMW—ranked eighth and ninth respectively.

Although Tesla ranked third among PV brands by March registrations, the hottest-selling PV model in Guangzhou was under the U.S. EV brand. The other Tesla-branded vehicle, the Model 3, was also on the top 5 PV models list with 955 units registered, the same as that of the Sylphy. Products under Toyota and Honda only occupied three spots in the top 10 PV model rankings.

In March 2022, the registrations of domestically-built new energy passenger vehicles (NEPVs) reached 14,792 units in Guangzhou, surging 95.1% from a year ago, while also rocketing 113% from a month earlier. The monthly NEPV registrations consisted of 11,841 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 2,951 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which included 539 range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs).

In terms of NEPV registrations in March, BYD was the best-performing brand in Guangzhou. Tesla, XPeng, Wuling, Dongfeng, NIO, and Venucia cracked the top 10 brand rankings with only BEVs for sale. Volkswagen had 242 NEPVs registered in the city, 71.7% of which were contributed by the ID. series.

By March registrations, BYD has three models breaking into the top 10 NEPV models in Guangzhou, while the XPeng P7 was the only one owned by a Chinese startup.
