Geely Auto G-Pilot strategy evolves in four steps
Shanghai (ZXZC)- On May 28th, Geely's Borui GE officially went on sale, with the ability to operate L2 autonomous driving functions as its biggest spotlight. Reportedly, the new model is outfitted with many intelligent driving systems, such as ICC (intelligent cruise control), ACC (adaptive cruise control) and LKA (lane-keeping assist) and carries intelligent driving intervention solution designed exclusively for China's road conditions.
Geely Auto launched its “four-step” autonomous driving planning on May 10 last year, dubbed G-Pilot. Unlike some companies who have frequent moves in autonomous driving area, such as SAIC Motor, NIO and Dongfeng Motor, Geely has been keeping quite a low profile in this emerging field. However, the automaker has never stopped developing autonomous driving technologies.
According to Geely's ten-year planning, all production models have been equipped with ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) from 2015, as a part of the strategy's first step, the G-Pilot 1.0. Next, Geely plans to install G-Pilot 2.0-level driving system in all production models from 2018 and then strives to launch higher-level autonomous vehicles by 2020, Liu Weiguo, the senior chief engineer of Geely Auto's intelligent driving development center, stated in an interview.
Reportedly, the G-Pilot 1.0 has achieved such functions as ACC, AEB (autonomous emergency braking), LDW (lane departure warning), etc.
In the phase of G-Pilot 2.0, the vehicle will be improved in the accuracy and reliability of environment perception by virtue of multi-sensors data fusion technology. Under some specific conditions, the G-Pilot 2.0 system has accomplished some autonomous driving functions, such as ICC (the function applied in Borui GE) and automatic parking. Going forward, it will be used in whole series of Geely's models.
Geely Auto is currently committed to developing G-pilot 3.0-level autonomous driving platform, which is able to release drivers from driving operations. The next-generation platform will realize the lane-changing between the next-door lanes and automatic parking without human surveillance. In addition, it could provide cloud and infotainment services as well.
G-Pilot 4.0, the highest level for Geely's autonomous driving technical route, will offer comprehensive mobility services, integrating autonomous driving technologies with mobility algorithm and logic and ultimately achieve driver's freedom.
