According to Volkswagen, the body shop was built in only six months. The automaker said that the MEB factory would be completed in mid-2022, with a designed annual production capacity of 350,000 vehicles tops. The pre-production vehicle of its first new energy vehicle model is projected to roll off the production line in the second half of 2022, with mass production starting in the second half of 2023.
CEO of Volkswagen (Anhui), Dr. Erwin Gabardi, said that as an essential piece to the group’s electrification puzzle, the MEB factory would empower Volkswagen’s future electric and connected mobility development. The company is making an effort to accelerate the construction of the MEB factory, improve its R&D capability, expand its industry value chain, and recruit talents.
The construction of the MEB factory was initiated in April 2021. The factory takes up 500,000 square meters, with over 70% of its buildings completed by now. Aside from the main site, Volkswagen is also building a supplier park for batteries and auto parts, taking up 930,000 square meters. The German auto giant said it plans to invest more than €140 million in the factory by 2025.
