BYD has launched the deployment of a 543 MWh Cube Pro liquid-cooled energy storage system in Las Vegas, with construction set to begin in the second quarter of 2023 and commercial operation expected by the end of the year.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) and battery giant revealed the information in a February 6 press release, saying the project will help Nevada's largest power provider achieve its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050.
BYD did not mention the name of the customer, though Nevada's largest power provider is NV Energy, owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Energy.
BYD is also a Warren Buffett-backed company, and the legendary American investor first bought BYD shares through Berkshire Hathaway Energy in September 2008 and first reduced his holdings on August 24, 2022.
The Las Vegas project aims to store and dispatch excess renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
The Cube Pro consists of a battery storage system that can be recharged daily to deliver stored renewable energy to the grid during peak electricity use periods to help smooth out peak demand in Nevada, BYD said.
The project will benefit residents in the Las Vegas area, as well as throughout Nevada, said Liu Wendi, BYD's senior director of energy storage business development.
BYD's Cube Pro is a liquid-cooled energy storage product with 80 percent higher energy density than its predecessor and is compatible with global energy storage standards.
It is the first product in China to pass the global UL9540A test and is now used in hundreds of large-scale energy storage projects around the world, BYD said.
This is BYD's latest development in the US energy storage market.
On May 31, 2022, BYD announced that it has successfully delivered its GWh-class solar energy storage plant project in North America.
The project, which uses BYD's energy storage product BYD CUBE T28, had passed trial runs and were in operation, BYD said at the time.
In November last year, BYD announced that the world's largest single-phase energy storage plant supplied by its energy storage business was put into commercial operation on the US West Coast.
The plant was supplied by BYD with the BYD Cube T28, a 1500V energy storage product with a storage capacity of nearly 1.7 GWh.
As of October 2022, BYD's energy storage business had shipped about 3.6 GWh cumulatively in the US, it said in a transcript of an investor relations event in November.
