Lotus Cars, which is majority-owned by Geely, is allowing consumers who buy its first all-electric Eletre Hyper-SUV to purchase the electronic mirrors as an option, although Chinese regulations allowing car companies to do so won't take effect until a few months from now.

Lotus said today it began offering the option to consumers who buy the Eletre for 16,000 yuan ($2,320).

For consumers who have already locked in their orders, they can contact Lotus sales to add the option.

The Lotus Eletre will be one of the first models in China to allow consumers to opt for an electronic rearview mirror, the company's poster reads.

The mirrors replace the traditional mirrors on each side of the vehicle with cameras, which Lotus says result in a more forward-looking design, lower wind resistance and longer range.

The two cameras are made of water-repelling material that heats and melts snow, and have features including blind spot monitoring and door opening warning.

Information from the mirrors will be displayed on 1,280*720 resolution LCD screens inside the car, increasing lateral visibility by 50 percent, the company said.

Deliveries of all Lotus Eletre with the optional electronic exterior mirrors will begin as early as July 1, 2023, the first day that Chinese regulations will begin to allow car companies to use such mirrors.

On October 26, 2022, the Eletre Hyper-SUV went on sale in two versions available in China -- the Eletre S+, and the Eletre R+.

They are both equipped with twin electric motors with a maximum power of 450 kW and 675 kW and peak torques of 710 Nm and 985 Nm, respectively.

The Eletre S+ can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and the Eletre R+ in 2.95 seconds.

The starting price of the Lotus Eletre S+ is RMB 828,000 and deliveries in China will begin in March 2023.

The Lotus Eletre R+ has a starting price of RMB 1,028,000 and deliveries in China will begin in May 2023.
