Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is recalling hundreds of imported Model X electric vehicles (EVs) in China, a follow-up to a recall from about four years ago.

Tesla will recall a total of 870 imported Model X vehicles with production dates between March 16, 2016, and July 31, 2016, starting October 8, according to a statement posted today on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.

This is a follow-up recall that based on the recall action issued on November 27, 2020, according to the announcement.

Some of the vehicles covered by this recall may have roof trim panels with insufficient primer.

Over time, the adhesion of the trim panels may weaken, and in extreme cases may detach from the vehicle, posing a safety hazard, according to the announcement.

Tesla will inspect the recalled vehicles and rerun the tension test on the roof trim panel free of charge, and if it fails that test, it will replace the roof trim panel and reinstall it with an application of primer, according to the announcement.

Tesla began delivering vehicles to Chinese owners in April 2014, with the initial model available here being the imported Model S electric sedan.

Tesla's Shanghai factory, which began construction on January 7, 2019, and began operations in late 2019, is the first wholly foreign-owned automotive manufacturing project in China.

Giga Shanghai began delivering Model 3 sedans in January 2020 and Model Y crossovers in January 2021 to local consumers.

Apart from the Model 3 and Model Y, other Tesla models have yet to be produced in China.
