GAC Aion's Changsha plant in central China's Hunan province has started production, with the first model to roll off the assembly line at the plant being the second-generation Aion V, the GAC Group electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary announced today.

The plant has an annual production capacity of 200,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs), with room for further capacity expansion, it said.

The Aion Changsha plant can produce a vehicle in as little as 53 seconds on average and supports more than 100,000 customized options, according to the company.

The plant is highly automated and is the first black-light factory in Hunan, Aion said.

The new plant, which began construction in October 2023, is a revamp of the former GAC Mitsubishi fuel vehicle production line that Aion took over.

GAC Mitsubishi was established in May 2012 by GAC Group, Mitsubishi Automotive Industries and Mitsubishi Corporation.

Mitsubishi withdrew from China last year, and the employees of the joint venture were transferred to GAC Aion.

Last October, GAC Group announced the completion of the reorganization of GAC Mitsubishi and the transfer of its Changsha plant to Aion.

In July, GAC Aion sold 35,238 vehicles, down 21.74 percent year-on-year and flat from 35,027 in June, according to figures it announced on August 1.

In the January-July period, GAC Aion sold 212,604 vehicles, down 16.42 percent year-on-year.
