Global EV battery market share in Jan-May 2024: CATL 37.5%, BYD 15.7%

CATL continues to be the world's largest battery maker in Jan-May, but share continued to decrease, while BYD continues to increase its share.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL, SHE: 300750) continued to be the world's largest battery maker in January-May, but its share decreased further. BYD continued to be in second place and increased its share.

In January-May, total global battery consumption for electric vehicles (EVs) was 285.4 GWh, up 23.0 percent from 232.1 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released today by South Korean market researcher SNE Research.

CATL's battery installations in the January-May period stood at 107 GWh, up 31.1 percent from 81.6 GWh in the same period last year.

The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 37.5 percent share and remained the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30 percent.

That's higher than its 35.2 percent share in the January-May 2023 period, but lower than its 37.7 percent share in the January-April 2024 period.

BYD's power battery installations in the January-May period were 44.9 GWh, up 21.1 percent from 37.0 GWh in the same period last year.

The company ranked second in the January-May period with a 15.7 percent share, down from 16.0 percent in the same period last year, but up from 15.4 percent in the January-April period.

BYD fell below LG Energy Solution in the January-February period, but regained ground on the South Korean firm in the January-March period.

LG Energy Solution's installed power battery volume in the January-May period was 35.9 GWh, up 5.6 percent year-on-year.

The South Korean company was third with a 12.6 percent share in the January-May period, down from 14.7 percent a year earlier and from 13 percent in the January-April period.

South Korea's SK On was fourth with 4.9 percent share, while South Korea's Samsung SDI and Japan's Panasonic were fifth and sixth with 4.8 percent and 4.7 percent share, respectively.

Notably, in the January-April ranking, Samsung SDI's share was higher than SK On's, which was in fourth place.

China's CALB, Eve Energy, Gotion High-tech, and Sunwoda ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, with shares of 4.5 percent, 2.4 percent, 2.3 percent, and 2.1 percent, respectively, in the January-May ranking.
