Tesla's China-made vehicles contributed 46.34 percent of global deliveries in the second quarter, the first time since the second quarter of 2022 that they were below 50 percent.

Tesla China sold 71,007 vehicles in June, including exports, down 2.16 percent from 72,573 in May and down 24.20 percent from 93,680 in the same month a year ago, according to data released earlier today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Figures for the company's June sales in China and vehicles exported from its Shanghai plant are not yet available. In the January-May period, Tesla sold 219,056 vehicles in China, a decrease of 0.38 percent year-on-year.

In the first half of 2024, Tesla delivered 830,766 vehicles globally, a decrease of 6.55 percent year-on-year.

China-made Tesla vehicles delivered 426,623 units in the first half of the year, contributing 51.35 percent of global deliveries.

Tesla produced 410,831 vehicles in the second quarter, including 386,576 Model 3 and Model Y units.

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) is one of Tesla's most important competitors in the EV space, and the two are once again close in BEV sales.

BYD sold 426,039 passenger BEVs in the second quarter, 17,917 fewer than Tesla and significantly smaller than the gap of 86,696 units in the first quarter.

BYD overtook Tesla in the BEV segment for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2023, but the latter regained the top spot in the first quarter of this year.

About half of BYD's sales come from BEVs and the other half from plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Including BEVs and PHEVs, BYD sold 982,747 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the second quarter, widening its lead over Tesla in total vehicle sales.
