Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL), Top Chinese automotive battery maker, has established partnership with a variety of international and domestic automakers in power battery area. Honda ties up with CATL to develop batteries and related technologies

CATL gained a new Japanese automaker partner Honda Motor just a few days ago. Both parties will team up to develop an electric vehicle that it sees as key to its global strategy, according to foreign media. The project will develop batteries and related technologies to be used mainly in the new electric car.

What's more, Honda plans to work with CATL in other areas as well, including electric vehicle performance testing, production technology and battery specifications. The automaker hopes to work with the Chinese company on future electric cars.

Nissan & Renault make battery deal with CATL

Nikkei Asian Review reports that CATL has signed an agreement with Nissan to supply it with batteries for the new Nissan Sylphy sedan that will be introduced in the Chinese market later this year. Besides, French automaker Renault, a part of a three-way alliance with Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, also plans to use CATL batteries for the electric version of its Kangoo compact van under development. 

CATL to provide battery cells for Daimler

On May 2, 2018, Daimler procurement executive Sabine Angermann announced the automaker has awarded a contract to China's Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) for supplying electric car battery cells. However, Sabine Angermann declined to disclose further details about the volume of the supply contract and whether it goes beyond supplying battery cells for Mercedes-Benz cars built outside of China.

CATL, Jaguar Land Rover sign letter of intent on strategic cooperation

Luxury automaker Jaguar Land Rover and Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) signed a letter of intent of strategic cooperation on Apr. 25, according to Jaguar Land Rover. Under this letter of intent, both parties will actively deepen cooperation in battery technology area of future vehicles and jointly research and develop vehicle power battery technologies. The successful signing of the cooperation intent will help promote Jaguar Land Rover to make breakthroughs in NEV technology area in China.

CATL, BYTON sign letter of intent on strategic cooperation

Apart from signing letter of intent on strategic cooperation with Jaguar Land Rover, CATL also signed a letter of intent on strategic cooperation with BYTON, China's fledgling EV maker. Based on the letter of intent, CATL will provide batteries for BYTON's first mass-produced SUV. In the future, both parties will actively explore deep cooperation modes on EV battery area.

SAIC Motor, CATL sign MoU on power battery recycling

SAIC Motor and Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL), China's leading power battery maker, signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) on March 22 to develop a deeper cooperation on new energy vehicle (NEV) battery recycling. Both parties will make full use of their advantages in R&D, manufacturing and services of new energy products to jointly boost the development of power battery recycling industry in China.

This was not the first cooperation of SAIC Motor and CATL. The prospectus CATL exposed before says that CATL and SAIC Capital Investment Limited jointly built CATL-SAIC Motor Power Battery Co.,Ltd and SAIC Motor-CATL Power Battery System Co.,Ltd in June 2017, with registered capitals of RMB 2 billion and RMB 300 million respectively. Both parties announced at that moment to co-produce a production base of highly intelligent and environmentally friendly battery products and battery system.

Volkswagen chooses CATL as China's only battery provider

Volkswagen has picked China's largest battery maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL), to supply batteries in its acceleration in the hot electric-vehicle (EV) market. It is said that CATL's batteries will be used in Volkswagen's latest MEB electric vehicle platform. After beating LG, Panasonic, Sumsung and Lishen, CATL has become Volkswagen's only battery provider in China.

CATL, BAIC, Dongfang Precision seek cooperation in power battery area

Guangdong Dongfang Precision Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Dongfang Precision) announced on Jan. 6 that its wholly-owned subsidiary Beijing Pride Power Battery Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Pride Power) signed a strategic cooperation agreement with BAIC Group, Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) and Pulead Technology Industry Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Pulead).

All parties aim to establish strategic partnership in NEV power battery area, make full use of their advantages to create synergies, and cooperate strategically in battery R&D, manufacturing, recycling and cascade utilization of batteries.

In accordance with the announcement, all parties will collaboratively optimize cost, improve the quality and comprehensive market competitiveness of the products in all kinds of industrial chains, including parts design, manufacturing, packing, logistics, storage, processing and distribution, etc. According to the announcement, all parties will cooperate to develop new-type batteries and special battery supportive facilities, as well as the charging and swapping service for NEV's power batteries. They will also carry out collaborative development and experiment in NEV batteries.

Changan invests RMB 519 million to acquire 0.3855% stake of CATL indirectly

Changan Automobile announced on Nov. 31, 2017 that the automaker would invest RMB 519 million to acquire the stake of Zhenjiang Maode Hairun Funds worth up RMB 490 million. After the acquisition, Changan Automobile will hold 32.67% of shares of Zhenjiang Maode Hairun Funds, which is equivalent to a 0.3855% stake of CATL.  

Changan Automobile stated that it had signed a strategic cooperation agreement with CATL in June, 2016, and had started the EV and PHEV projects. The indirect acquisition of 0.3855% stake of CATL can enhance both parties' cooperation. In the long run, the strategic investment will exert positive influence on the development of Changan Automobile, in terms of alternative fuel vehicles.

Dongfeng acquires certain stake of CATL, sign strategic framework agreement with CATL

At the beginning of October, 2017, Liu Weidong, vice president of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, said that the automaker has acquired a certain stake of CATL. On Dec. 23, 2016, Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) and Dongfeng Motor Corporation signed a strategic framework agreement. By making full advantages of both parties, the two companies will co-create a cooperative platform in alternative fuel vehicle industry, in order to support each other, reinforce complementary advantages and realize mutual benefits, according to the agreement. Since Dongfeng Motor Corporation's demand on power battery will be huge in the future, the automaker addressed its wishes to explore deep cooperation in EV battery and power equipment area with CATL.
