Shanghai's Nanhui facilitating 10 Tesla cars for FSD pilot use
Shanghai's Nanhui New Town is facilitating 10 Tesla vehicles for FSD (Full Self-Driving) pilot use, local media SH Observer quoted an official as saying.
Shanghai's Nanhui New Town is facilitating 10 Tesla vehicles to carry out the pilot use of FSD (Full Self-Driving), local media SH Observer said today, citing Lu Sen, director of the data department of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone Lingang New Area Administrative Committee.
Tesla's cross-field application proves that cutting-edge products such as smart new energy vehicles (NEVs) have a very obvious boost to other related industries, the report said.
The report did not provide more details on FSD or when the 10 Tesla vehicles will be ready to begin pilot use of FSD.
On May 30, Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Tesla was preparing to register its FSD software with Chinese authorities in order to roll out the feature this year as planned.
After Tesla successfully registers its software with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), it will be able to have its employees conduct internal testing of FSD on public roads in China, and then offer it as an upgrade to Chinese users in the coming months, according to Reuters.
The US electric vehicle maker was also considering selling the software to car users in China for a monthly fee equal to about $98, they said.
Tesla currently offers FSD to car owners for a one-time fee of RMB 64,000 yuan ($8,830).
In China, all Tesla vehicles come with the free Basic Autopilot (BAP) software. Tesla offers Enhanced Autopilot (EAP), FSD software as an option, with EAP being half the price of FSD.
On November 22, 2023, Chinese media outlet China Fund News cited a Tesla source as saying that work to bring FSD to China was moving forward.
Several Chinese government departments jointly issued a notice in November allowing cars supporting L3 and L4 autonomous driving to conduct road tests based on pilots in limited areas, and clarifying for the first time the determination of accident liability.
Against this backdrop, the entry of Tesla FSD into China, one of the major players in smart driving technology, is seen as entering the countdown stage, the report said.
In order to introduce FSD to China, Tesla has previously made a lot of preparations, the report noted.
In 2021, Tesla set up a data center in Shanghai, where all data generated by its China operations, including production data, sales data, service data and charging data, are stored entirely within China to comply with regulatory requirements.
Tesla has also set up an FSD operations team in Shanghai as well as a data labeling team, and has sent engineers from its headquarters to do training, the report said.
Tesla China has also been assisting regulatory authorities in pushing for high-level autonomous driving laws and regulations, according to the report.
In late April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted that Tesla FSD's entry into China could be soon.
"It may be possible very soon," Musk said on April 20 in response to a question from a user on the X platform he owns about when the FSD will enter China.
