Global EV battery market share in Jan-Apr 2024: CATL 37.7%, BYD 15.4%

CATL continued to be the world's largest battery manufacturer in January-April, albeit with a slight decrease in share. BYD remained in second place and saw its share increase.
In January-April, total global battery consumption for electric vehicles (EVs) was 216.2 GWh, up 21.8 percent from 177.6 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released yesterday by South Korean market researcher SNE Research.
CATL's battery installations in the January-April period stood at 81.4 GWh, up 30 percent from 62.6 GWh in the same period last year.
The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 37.7 percent share and remained the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30 percent.
That's higher than its 35.3 percent share in the January-April 2023 period, but lower than its 37.9 percent share in the January-March 2024 period.
BYD's power battery installations were 33.2 GWh in January-April, up 18.3 percent from 28.1 GWh in the same period last year.
The company ranked second in the January-April period with a 15.4 percent share, down from 15.8 percent in the same period last year, but up from 14.3 percent in the January-March period.
BYD fell below LG Energy Solution in the January-February period, but overtook the South Korean firm in the January-March period.
LG Energy Solution's installed power battery volume in the January-April period was 28 GWh, up 7.8 percent year-on-year.
The South Korean firm was third with a 13 percent share in the January-April period, down from 14.6 percent a year earlier and from 13.6 percent in the January-March period.
South Korea's Samsung SDI was fourth with a 5.1 percent share, while South Korea's SK On and Japan's Panasonic were fifth and sixth with 4.8 percent and 4.7 percent shares, respectively.
China's CALB, Eve Energy, Gotion High-tech, and Sunwoda ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th with 4.3 percent, 2.3 percent, 2.2 percent, and 2.0 percent share in the January-April period, respectively.
Sunwoda replaced Svolt, which ranked in tenth place last month.
