BYD invests RMB 12 bln in Xi’an power battery base with annual capacity of 30GWh

Shanghai (ZXZC)- BYD's new power battery program with an annual capacity of 30GWh formally settled in Xi'an Hi-tech Industries Development Zone on September 9. Meanwhile, BYD's monorail demonstration line program officially started construction in this city.

According to local media, the automaker's Xi'an power battery program involves a total investment of RMB 12 billion, and has the potential to be a “super factory” in Chinese power battery industry.

Aside from the Xi’an base, BYD has previously initiated or completed several power battery programs this year. On August 23, BYD and local government of Chongqing Bishan District signed an investment cooperation agreement, planning to invest RMB 10 billion in building a power battery program with an annual capacity of 20GWh, which is designed to manufacture such core products as power battery cell, module and develop other supporting industries.

The automaker and Changan Automobile reached an agreement on July 5 to establish a joint venture specializing in the manufacturing and marketing of new-energy vehicle (NEV) batteries. The new JV's planned 10GWh production capacity will be divided into two phases. Besides, the first phase of BYD Qinghai Nanchuan battery plant put the 10GWh power battery manufacturing project into production on June 27.

By far, the total planned and existing battery capacity for BYD has already exceeded 100 GWh on an annual basis, which is far beyond the national annual deliveries of 36.4GWh in 2017.
