Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) has reportedly asked its suppliers to ramp up production capacity, with its first electric vehicle (EV) model, the SU7, seeing huge initial acceptance after it went on sale, leading to notably longer delivery wait times.

Xiaomi's car-making arm, Xiaomi EV, recently asked suppliers to increase production capacity to match a monthly production of 10,000 cars, with higher priority given to the top-trim variant, according to a report in local media Yicai today.

Based on the original plan, Xiaomi EV would produce more than 3,000 units per month by March, growing to 4,000 to 5,000 units by April, and thereafter stabilizing at 6,000 units by the end of the year, the report said.

However, recent sales of the Xiaomi EV have exceeded expectations, with locked-in orders for the SU7 reaching 40,000 units as of the early morning of April 2, according to the report.

If the previous production schedule is followed, the Xiaomi SU7's delivery cycle will only continue to lengthen, the report said.

As of today, the Xiaomi EV App shows waiting times of 21-24 weeks for the standard version of the SU7, 19-22 weeks for the Pro version, and 29-32 weeks for the Max version, meaning that customers ordering the model now will have to wait up to about eight months.

Xiaomi officially launched the SU7 at a launch event on the evening of March 28, offering three trims. Deliveries of the Founders Edition vehicles, limited to 5,000 units, will first begin on April 3.

Xiaomi will hold a ceremony for the first deliveries of the Xiaomi SU7 on April 3 at the Xiaomi EV factory in Yizhuang, Beijing, the smartphone maker's founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun announced on Weibo earlier today.

Deliveries of the customized Xiaomi SU7 vehicles will begin at the end of April for the standard and Max versions, and at the end of May for the Pro version, the company said at the model's launch event.

Xiaomi has reportedly secured 40,000 locked-in orders for SU7
