Gotion's chairman said the battery maker will set up a project team to communicate with Nio on technologies, and expects to see substantial results from their cooperation soon.

Gotion's Li said the company will set up a project team to communicate with Nio on technologies based on its technological, cost and internationalization advantages.

Gotion's chairman said he expects the two companies to achieve substantial results in their cooperation as soon as possible, and jointly promote the technological innovation and development of the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry.

Nio's senior vice president for electric drive and high-voltage systems, Zeng Shuxiang, Nio Power senior vice president, Shen Fei, Gotion's president of China business, Wang Qisui, and Gotion's director of engineering institute, Wang Qiang, participated in the discussion, according to the press release.

The brief press release said nothing more.

Gotion is headquartered in Hefei, Anhui province, which is also home to Nio's two factories.

The battery maker is one of the world's largest, though it is not currently a supplier to Nio.

Nio's current battery supplier is CATL, and the EV maker has filed for batteries from smaller supplier CALB for a number of models last year, though they are not yet in service.

Nio is also working with local startup Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology on semisolid battery packs with a 150-kWh capacity, which is expected to be operational in the second quarter.

Nio launches new 75-kWh battery pack using only LFP cells, expected to further reduce costs
