China sells 1.2 million NEVs in Dec, nears 10 million for full year 2023, CAAM data show

China's total vehicle sales in 2023 stood at 30,094,000 units, the first time it has surpassed the 30 million mark, with NEVs contributing 31.6 percent.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales exceeded 1 million units for the second consecutive month, putting full-year 2023 sales just below 10 million.

China's December NEV sales totaled 1,191,000 units, up 46.4 percent year-on-year and up 16.1 percent from November, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

CAAM's NEV sales are the wholesale sales of automakers, including sales in China and exports to overseas markets. NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel-cell vehicles.

BEV sales in December were a record 825,000 units, up 32.2 percent year-on-year and up 17.5 percent from November.

PHEV sales in December were a record 364,000 units, up 93 percent year-on-year and up 12.7 percent from November.

Fuel cell vehicle sales in December were up 149.1 percent to 2,000 units.

China's all vehicle sales in December were 3,156,000 units, up 23.5 percent year-on-year and up 6.3 percent from November.

This means that NEV penetration was 37.7 percent in December, up from 34.5 percent in November.

In 2023, China's NEV sales were 9,495,000 units, up 37.9 percent year-on-year and close to the 10 million-unit mark.

China's all vehicle sales were 30,094,000 units in 2023, exceeding the 30 million mark for the first time. About 31.6 percent of 2023 vehicle sales were contributed by NEVs.

BEV sales were 6,685,000 units in 2023, up 24.66 percent year-on-year. A total of 2,804,000 units of PHEVs were sold, up 84.7 percent year-on-year.

Excluding exports, China sold a record 1.08 million NEVs in December, up 47.5 percent year-on-year and up 16.2 percent from November.

In 2023, excluding exports, China's NEV sales were 8.292 million units, up 33.5.7 percent year-on-year.

In December, vehicle exports from China were 499,000 units, up 54.3 percent year-on-year and up 3.5 percent from November.

Of these, NEV exports were 111,000 units, up 36.5 percent year-on-year and up 0.5 percent from November.

China exported 4.91 million vehicles in 2023, up 57.9 percent year-on-year. NEVs exported 1.203 million vehicles during the period, up 77.6 percent year-on-year.

China exported 99,000 BEVs in December, up 34 percent year-on-year and up 20.2 percent from November.

The country exported 1.102 million BEVs in 2023, up 80.9 percent year-on-year.
