China NEV retail hits record 841,000 in Nov, penetration exceeds 40% for 1st time, CPCA data show

China's passenger new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales reached a record high last month, with penetration exceeding the 40 percent mark for the first time.

China's passenger NEVs sold 841,000 units at retail in November, surpassing the 800,000-unit mark for the first time, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

That's up 39.8 percent from a year ago and up 8.9 percent from October.

The figure is higher than the preliminary figure of 783,000 units released by the CPCA earlier this month, and also higher than the estimate of 820,000 units it released at the end of last month.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for a record 552,000 retail sales in November, or 65.6 percent of all retail sales of NEVs. That was up 26.1 percent year-on-year and up 10.3 percent from October.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) sold a record 289,000 retail units in November, contributing 34.4 percent of all NEV retail sales. That was up 76.4 percent year-on-year and up 6.4 percent from October.

China's passenger vehicles, including sedans, SUVs and MPVs, saw retail sales of 2.08 million units in November, up 26.0 percent year-on-year and up 2.4 percent from October.

The penetration rate of NEVs at retail was 40.4 percent in November, exceeding the 40 percent mark for the first time. That was up 4 percentage points from 36 percent a year earlier, and up 2.7 percentage points from 37.7 percent in October.

The retail penetration rate of NEVs of local brands was 62.1 percent, compared with 30.9 percent for luxury brands and 6.6 percent for mainstream joint venture brands, according to the CPCA.

From January to November, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China amounted to 6.809 million units, a year-on-year increase of 35.2 percent.

China's wholesale sales of passenger NEVs reached a record 962,000 units in November, up 31.5 percent year-on-year and up 8.2 percent from October.

The penetration rate of NEVs in wholesale was 37.7 percent in November, up 1.7 percentage points from 36 percent a year earlier and up from 36.1 percent in October.

The penetration rate of local brands of NEVs in wholesale in November was 52.6 percent, compared with 35.2 percent for luxury brands and 7.9 percent for mainstream JV brands.

In the January-November period, wholesale sales of Chinese passenger NEVs amounted to 7.777 million units, up 35.2 percent year-on-year.

China's passenger NEV exports were 89,000 units in November, up 8 percent year-on-year but 21 percent lower than in October, contributing 23.5 percent of passenger vehicle exports.

BEVs contributed 89 percent of China's NEV exports in November, according to the CPCA.
