The Seagull, the least expensive model under the BYD umbrella, sold 43,350 units in October, making it the second-highest selling BYD model.

The Seagull is the least expensive model under the BYD umbrella to date and one of the highest selling BYD models.

The model went on sale on April 26 and is currently offered in three variants with starting prices of RMB 73,800 ($10,360), RMB 78,800, and RMB 89,800 respectively.

The BYD Seagull is an A0-class electric vehicle based on the e-Platform 3.0, with a length, width and height of 3,780 mm, 1,715 mm and 1,540 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm.

The model is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 55 kW and a peak torque of 135 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The car is offered in two range versions with blade batteries of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, which provide a CLTC range of 305 km and 405 km respectively.

The BYD Seagull supports fast charging, taking 30 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent.

The lower price allows the Seagull to reach a wider potential user base.

Before 2020, BYD was targeting the RMB 100,000 to RMB 200,000 new energy vehicle (NEV) market, as the mid-to-high end of the market has huge barriers to entry for local Chinese carmakers at that time.

With the release of the BYD Han in the second half of 2020, BYD was gradually expanding its presence in the RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000 range.

On September 20, the U8, the first production vehicle from BYD's premium Yangwang brand, went on sale at a starting price of RMB 1.098 million, the highest priced in BYD's portfolio.

BYD earlier this month reported record sales of 301,833 NEVs in October, with the Seagull contributing 43,350 units, overtaking the Qin family as the second-highest selling BYD model.

In the January-October period, BYD sold 2,381,471 NEVs, up 70.36 percent year-on-year.

BYD Seagull sold 185,089 units from April-October, data monitored by CnEVPost show.
