MIIT: NEV makers will be responsible for recycling batteries

Shanghai (ZXZC)-On the afternoon of Oct. 2, the 13th Session of the Twelfth National People's Congress was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. An exclusive enquiry on the implementation of Law of People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution Caused by Solid Wastes was also held during the meeting.

When answering the enquiry on reducing the augment and releasing the existing volume of the industrial solid wastes, Miao Wei, Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) stated that they will fully implement the policy of extended producer responsibility, and on Nov. 1, MIIT had held a researching meeting to target the management of power batteries and intend to formulate the policy of extended producer responsibility for the recycling of NEV's power batteries. Specifically speaking, automakers should take the responsibility of recycling the batteries once they sell their cars.

According to the statistics from MIIT, the output and sales of NEVs reached 424,000 units and 398,000 units respectively during January and September, 2017. Up to the end of 2016, Chinese NEV parc reached more than 1,000,000 units. It is estimated that China will see the scrap battery boom soon, and the scrap battery volume will totaled 248,000 tons by 2020, approximately 20 times of that of in 2016.
