Global EV battery market share in Jan-Aug: CATL 36.9%, BYD 15.9%

CATL's share of the global EV battery market in January-August rose from January-July, while BYD declined slightly.

Chinese power battery giant CATL saw its share of the global EV battery market rise in January-August from January-July, while BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) saw a slight decline.

In the January-August period, total global EV battery consumption was 429.0 GWh, up 48.9 percent from 288.1 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released October 11 by South Korean market researcher SNE Research.

CATL's battery installations from January to August amounted to 158.3 GWh, up 54.4 percent from 102.5 GWh in the same period last year.

The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 36.9 percent share, and remains the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30.0 percent.

This was up from its 35.6 percent share in the same period last year and from its 36.6 percent share in the January-July period.

BYD installed 68.1 GWh of power batteries in the January-August period, up 87.1percent from 36.4 GWh in the same period last year.

The company ranked second in the January-August period with a 15.9 percent share, up from 12.6 percent in the same period last year while down from 16.0 percent in the January-July period.

South Korea's LG Energy Solution saw a 58.5-percent year-on-year increase in power battery installations to 60.9 GWh in the January-August period.

The South Korean company ranked third in the world with a 14.2 percent share, slightly higher than the 13.3 percent share in the same period last year and unchanged from the January-July period.

Japan's Panasonic was fourth with a 7.1 percent share, South Korea's SK On was fifth with a 5.1 percent share, and China's CALB was sixth with a 4.7 percent share.

South Korea's Samsung SDI, China's Eve Energy, Gotion High-tech, and Sunwoda ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, with shares of 4.1percent, 2.1 percent, 2.1 percent, and 1.4 percent from January to August.
