China EV battery installations in Aug: CATL's share rises to 44.29%, BYD falls to 26.97%

CATL's share of China's EV battery market increased in August, as it gained additional share in the BYD-dominated LFP market.

CATL's share of China's electric vehicle (EV) battery market rose in August, while BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) slipped, with both continuing to hold the lion's share of the market.

In August, China's power battery installed base was 34.9 GWh, up 25.7 percent year-on-year and up 8.2 percent from July, according to data released today by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

CATL's power battery installed capacity in August was 15.45 GWh, ranking first with a 44.29 percent share, up 2.5 percentage points from July's 41.79 percent share.

BYD's power battery installed capacity was 9.41 GWh in August, ranking second with a 26.97 percent share, down 2.04 percentage points from July's 29.01 percent.

BYD's share of China's power battery market was around 34 percent in both January and February. Since March, BYD's share has been below 30 percent except in May.

CALB, with 3.38 GWh of power batteries installed in August, ranked third with a 9.69 percent share, down 0.24 percentage points from 9.93 percent in July.

Gotion High-tech ranked fourth with a 3.54 percent share in August with 1.24 GWh installed, down 0.35 percentage points from 3.89 percent in July.

Gotion's ranking was overtaken by Eve Energy in April, a status that continued into July.

Eve Energy fell back to fifth place in August with an installed volume of 1.22 GWh and a share of 3.51 percent.

China's Li-ion ternary battery installed capacity was 10.8 GWh in August, accounting for 31 percent of the total installed capacity, up 2.7 percent year-on-year and up 2.3 percent from July.

LFP battery installed volume was 24.1 GWh, accounting for 69 percent of the total installed volume, up 39.7 percent year-on-year and up 11.0 percent from July.

In the LFP battery market, BYD topped the list with a 39.11 percent share in August with an installed volume of 9.41 GWh, but down from 43.18 percent share in July.

CATL ranked second in the LFP battery market in August with a 35.13 percent share of 8.45 GWh, up from 31.69 percent in July.

CALB ranked third in the LFP battery market in August with a 7.37 percent share, while Gotion ranked fourth with 4.78 percent.

In the Li-ion ternary battery market, CATL ranked first with a 64.76 percent share in August with an installed base of 7.00 GWh.

CALB and LG Energy Solution ranked second and third in the ternary battery market with 14.85 percent and 5.97 percent share, respectively.
