Tesla is recalling a total of 271 imported Model S and Model X vehicles in China for seat belt and camera installation issues.

Tesla is recalling a total of 271 imported Model S and Model X electric vehicles (EVs) in China due to seat belt and camera installation issues.

The recall includes 234 Model S and Model X vehicles with production dates between February 5 and May 16, 2023, where the first-row seat belts and pretensioners were disassembled during production or after-sale service, and the seat belts may not have been connected to the pretensioner anchors according to the design specifications during reinstallation.

If the vehicle is involved in a crash, the seat belts may not function as designed restraints, posing a safety hazard, according to an announcement posted today on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.

Tesla will inspect the first-row seat belt and pretensioner anchor points for vehicles covered by the recall, free of charge. If the connections are found not to meet design specifications, they will be reinstalled according to the specifications and, if necessary, the seat belt assembly will be replaced.

The recall also includes 37 Model S and Model X vehicles with January 17 to July 11, 2023, production dates.

The front view camera installation in some vehicles does not meet the pitch angle design requirements, resulting in some active safety features not being enabled properly and not alerting the driver accordingly, according to the statement.

Tesla will check the pitch angle of the front view camera for the recalled vehicles free of charge, and those that exceed the design interval will be adjusted to meet the design requirements and eliminate the safety hazard.

In China, Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 and Model Y. It's its largest factory in the world, with an annual production capacity of about 1.1 million vehicles per year.

Tesla sold 64,285 China-made vehicles in July, including those exported as well as those delivered in China, data released yesterday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.

The more expensive Model S and Model X are not being built in China, where they are being sold through imports.

On January 6, Tesla announced the prices of the new Model S and the new Model X in China at the same time as it dramatically lowered the prices of the locally produced Model 3 and Model Y.

At the time, the Model S was priced at RMB 789,900 and the Model S Plaid at RMB 1,099,900, while the Model X was priced at RMB 879,900 and the Model X Plaid at RMB 1,039,900.

On March 27, Tesla announced that deliveries of the new Model S and Model X in China had begun.

On May 5, the prices of the new Model S and the entire Model X lineup were raised by RMB 19,000 in China.

On July 1, Tesla announced an inventory car purchase incentive for the Model S and Model X in China, with discounts of up to RMB 45,000, even though the prices of the two models on its website remained unchanged.
