Mercedes-Benz is recalling thousands of EQS cars in China, the second recall in the past month.

The German luxury automaker is recalling 2,324 imported EQS vehicles with production dates ranging from June 14, 2021 to July 8, 2022, starting today, according to an announcement posted on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.

The recalled vehicles may deactivate the electric drive module due to a software issue, resulting in a loss of vehicle power when the signal from the electrical connector that connects the electric drive module to the disintegrator is abnormal, according to the announcement.

Mercedes-Benz will update the electric drive module software for the recalled vehicles through authorized dealers, free of charge, to eliminate the potential safety hazard.

Mercedes-Benz will also recall 1,051 imported EQS vehicles with production dates between June 14, 2021 and February 16, 2022, and a total of 16,500 China-made Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class vehicles with production dates between April 23, 2019 and June 1, 2022, starting August 28.

These vehicles have a safety hazard due to deviations in the development process of the high-voltage battery management system, where the monitoring function of the high-voltage battery does not issue a warning to alert the driver as expected in the event of a battery malfunction.

Mercedes-Benz will update the software of the battery management system free of charge for the recalled vehicles through authorized dealers, according to the announcement.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz will also recall 12,750 imported S-Class vehicles with production dates between July 29, 2020 and September 8, 2021, starting August 4.

The function of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic stability control (ESC) may be affected in these vehicles due to a software problem with the voltage converter of the auxiliary on-board electrical system.

Mercedes-Benz will update the auxiliary on-board electrical system voltage converter software for the recalled vehicles free of charge, the announcement said.

On July 19, Mercedes-Benz recalled 32,786 imported S-Class and EQS vehicles in China because of a ESP software problem.

Mercedes-Benz launched the EQS electric sedan in China in December 2021, with a current starting price of 881,000 yuan ($122,720).

The German luxury carmaker launched the EQS SUV in China in February, with a current starting price of RMB 910,500.

Mercedes, like other foreign carmakers, has performed weakly in China's competitive EV market, though it still has high hopes for the market.

China will be absolutely at the center of Mercedes-Benz's next wave of electric offensive, which will begin in 2025 with the new e-architecture, its CEO Ola Kaellenius told German automotive magazine Automobilwoche late last month.
